I visited my first cenote in Mexico in 2018. Recently I visited 2 others cenote's, and was set to visit a 3rd, but unfortunately plans got shifted around. Then on my way out at the Tulum airport, they had aerial photographs of the cenotes of Bacalar! I never had before a bucket list, but now I do!
Cenotes are soooo clear and refreshing in the Mexican heat! Cenote Santa Rosa has a little island in the middle, and you can swim around the entire island. Because it was in May, after the dry season, parts of the cenote were rather shallow, but in this in no way impeded the pleasure! If you have goggles, take them with you. There is also a place you can jump off into the water.
Since inflation and evaluation of the dollar, cenotes are rather pricey: about 300 pesos mx for a non-resident. They open around 9:00 a.m. and close around 5:00 p.m. Go early and you will probably have the place to yourself. I would stay away from them on the weekend if possible , when the Mexican families visit, when I can get crowded. You're not allowed to you suntan lotion, to protect the clear water, to make preparations accordingly.
