点评:Have been travelling through Kadina for quite a few years and always have said when passing the sign on the main road pointing to the museum “I must do that one day!” The one day came and I was kicking myself that I hadn’t done it earlier. In comparison to a number of rural museums I have seen in travels, this has to be one of the most organised and well-presented museums.
The admission is reasonable, the staff very friendly and explained what was where and also a printed guide of what was where. That was invaluable. First up Matta House. What an experience with the detailed furnishings, clothing and everyday items like the oven and cooking utensils.
Next up the history of Wallaroo Mines and the Kadina Township after passing the outhouse. Then the printing press, the firetrucks, the tractors and the school. Set up as I recalled both as a student and a teacher, this brought back many memories. The K-type desks, the cursive writing, the maps, the readers, all set in a wooden classroom that was previously at Kulpara. The farm equipment from early models onward.
To me the unexpected was in the rotunda. Originally opened in 1905 and after three dismantlings now at its final location. Inside is what surprised me - in the form of a musician’s stand for several players, a 1913 tribute to the memory of the Bandsmen on the ill-fated Titanic. Each musician’s stand has a plaque in memory of a particular band member.
Whew! What a fantastic experience. Next time I will allow at 4 hours to take in even more from this outstanding regional museum. Thank you to the staff and volunteers in Kadina and surrounds for making this possible.
