点评：The Raja Ampat expedition in 2024, was for me an unbelievable experience. Being an older woman, I apprehended participating: would I be able to take part in all activities? Even though those two weeks on the Shakti were often at the limit of my "comfort zone", I enjoyed every moment of it and I did it all!
It was a fantastic adventure. Our small group of 10, led by Geoff and assisted by the crew of the boat and some Papuan friends of Geoff, was introduced to the marvels of that beautiful and pristine part of the world that is Cendrawasi Bay, the Birdshead peninsula and Raja Ampat.
-We swam with the giant, gentle whale sharks off a local fishing platform.
-One evening we were taken in two small boats deep into a cove in the jungle, where we waited to see and hear (the noice!) of hundreds of hornbills coming in to roost for the night.
-We landed at Jamursba Media, where the giant leatherback turtles come up on the beach at night to aly their eggs.With our red headlamps we walked many kilometers and witnessed this magic event.
-We visited villages where Geoff had his Papua friends.
-We snorkeled the most diverse and pristine reefs, always assisted by members of the Shakti crew, who followed us along the currents.
-Frangki les us through the jungle to places where we watched the Birds of Paradise.
-We climbed steep mountains to watch the incredible scenery of Wayag.
Back on the boat, apart from real fun time, we had discussions about what we had experienced, with books about flora and fauna at hand. There was so much to learn!
Geoff would amuse us with stories of his vast experience of hanging out in the area: The hardships of living with the local Papuans during his research on the Leatherbacks.
He made us realize how very special these two weeks were.
The Shakti is not a cruise ship, but besides being a beautiful boat, it is comfortable and with it's excellent crew, all needs were taken care of, including good cooking.
