点评:Visited in early March and place was almost deserted. Free parking by the marina and no traffic. From reading other reviews it seems we were very fortunate…. no traffic holdup and no rip off parking.
The view of the ramparts on walking up to the citadel was impressive, and expectations for what to discover within the citadel were raised.
Unfortunately this sense of anticipation did not last for more than a few metres within the city walls. Buildings are shabby and historical features poorly maintained. Some modern construction methods have been used for new buildings; either complete new structures or badly designed additions to existing.
Tacky souvenir shops and ice cream parlours were being readied for the next inrush of tourists soon to be packing the narrow alleyways. Several notices highlighting features of historical interest were only written in French.
The further up one ventures into the citadel the greater the sense of disappointment culminating with the concrete crèche and the modern hotel with adjacent car park!
Don’t want to spoil the fun for others, but at least for me, Bonifacio needs a cohesive preservation and regeneration plan to ensure undoubted historical pedigree is preserved for the future.
