点评：We drove from Michigan to South Dakota with our teenage son without much time to plan. Driving toward the Black Hills, the beauty of the Land overtook us. Complicated stories about American history morphed into questions. Would National Park Visitors Centers tell the full story? What if we could learn about this area from local, Native American teacher or guide?
Thanks to the internet and a quick search we found the work of Guss and Tianna Yellow Hair, a father-daughter team offering cultural tours of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Having spent time with a tour guide on a previous family trip, we knew the value of hiring a local guide.
We met in the late afternoon as the sun began to lower in The Badlands near the White River Visitor’s Center. Tianna and Guss worked with our travel schedule to provide an hour-long stationary talk there. We stood together in an intimate semi-circle facing the land. They shared beautiful, authentic, raw and difficult information about the history and experience of their Oglala Sioux Tribe. Their talk incorporated cultural teachings with a generous invitation to participate.
Tianna and Guss gave a singular experience to our family. It will inform the way we plan and seek knowledge on future trips. I look forward to returning for a longer tours including a tour of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. We saw a lot during our week in SD, but our Tatanka Rez Tourz encounter was the most important part of our trip; it integrated the journey for us. Although meeting Tianna and Guss happened at the end of our trip, it felt like a beginning. Thank you!
