We Made It A Blockbuster Night!
The Last Blockbuster的点评
点评：Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my dad and I went to our local Blockbuster every Friday night to rent movies on VHS (Video Home System) tape cassette that we would watch at home over the weekend on our VCR (videocassette recorder). You would have to remember to be kind and rewind the tapes back to the beginning or else pay a small fee upon returning the movies to the store.
From its humble beginnings in Dallas, TX back in 1984, it eventually soared to a high of over 9,000 locations in 2004. However, due to multiple reasons, there were only nine remaining in America with six in Alaska, one in Texas, and two in Oregon by the end of 2017. By August 2018, this store in Bend, OR became the last Blockbuster left in America. Finally in January 2020 after the closing of a store in New Zealand, this Bend, OR store became the last in the whole wide world. I'm talking all galaxies and all dimensions. It's a bit strange I think. Some blame bad business decisions for their demise. I blame the sheer laziness in their customer base. Get off your couch, chair, bed, computer, phone, whatever, and go to the store and browse the rows and rows of movie offerings sorted by genre and then again in alphabetical order. What's not to like? I know people who met their special someone just browsing the aisles trying to find a good movie to watch for the night. Get up, get out, and talk to people. It's mind shattering really.
In the end, I got to experience the once-in-a-lifetime nostalgic memories of years gone by while I also sharing it with my son who sadly had never even heard of Blockbuster. We bought an ornament for $10 and my son got some candy for $1.89. Our two rented movies were $3.99 each, Transformer: Rise of the Beasts and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Something cool was at checkout, they made me a laminated Blockbuster member card just like old times. This gold and blue card is kept securely in my wallet in case Netflix folds and Blockbuster makes a dramatic comeback. Oh yeah, I'm a dreamer.
