点评：Aoyama Villa (Kyū Aoyama Bettei), a luxurious villa built by the Aoyama family, one of the most successful families in the herring fishing industry during late 19th and early 20th centuries. The family spared no expense in the materials and construction of the villa and surrounding gardens.
Aoyama Residence is a multi-story residence that was built for a local magnet, Masakichi who had built his fortune from herring fishing; the fortune was built up over two generations. Masae, the daughter when visiting friends in their mansion in northern Honshu returned home to Otaru in Hokkaido; she wanted to create even finer villa. Her father began the building in 1917 guided by her. Although Masakichi had been a successful herring businessman, he had finer taste for beauty and the arts. Father and daughter enjoyed making Japanese paintings and calligraphy, so they designed an artistically superb house. An Imperial carpenter was hired to direct 40 carpenters, plasterers and joiners to complete the structure over 6 years. The paintings and calligraphy were created by a great master, Gyokudo Kawai, with 10 of his disciples over a month. Outside equally lavish gardens were created.
There are several rooms that are open to visitors and each as beautiful as the other, see the pictures with more details.
