点评:Utah Beach is one of the five beaches, famous as the landing sites for the WWII D-Day invasion of France on 6 June, 1944.
It is not as famous as nearby Omaha Beach, which has featured in movies such as The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. It's also the furthest west of the five beaches so overall, it attracts far fewer visitors and is much less busy.
Unlike the other beaches which have become popular beach resorts, Utah is not touristy or commercialised. There are no houses or shops lining the beachfront and it’s still in a very natural, undeveloped state, making it much easier to imagine the events of D-Day some 80 years ago.
There are no tangible reminders or historic remnants of the D-Day left on the beach itself but there are several memorials and monuments clustered around the sandy path that leads down to the water. In the surrounding area, you can see Allied vehicles, the remains of German bunkers and anti-landing obstacles like the infamous ‘Czech hedgehog’. There’s also a cafe and large museum (although we didn’t have time to visit this).
The short path takes you through the dunes, then the beachfront opens up in front of you as a vast expanse. It’s a long, long, flat stretch of beach with firm, compact sand. We walked along it for a while, then sat quietly in the shade of the dunes, to reflect on the events of D-Day and all that it meant.
TIPS FOR PLANNING A D-DAY TRIP:
In preparation, I bought The D-Day Visitors Handbook (by Kevin Dennehy and Stephen T. Powers) - it was an invaluable resource.
Hiring a car gave us a lot more freedom to explore the beaches and surrounds than a tour
Arromanches/Gold Beach was a great base for a couple of days. It’s the middle beach, we were able to visit Utah and Omaha on Day 1, then head in the opposite direction and visit Juno and Sword Beaches and Pegasus Bridge on Day 2. You need at least 2 - 3 days to cover just the main sites comfortably.
