Unforgettable journey from Ilulissat to the Sakkarliup Glacier

点评：Given how difficult and unpredictable travel in Greenland can be, we were very fortunate that our excursion from Ilulissat to the Sakkarliup glacier went by almost without a hitch. It was an unforgettable experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life, and one of those trips where it is about both the journey and the destination. The fact that this glacier is so inaccessible means that very few people get to see it; that makes it all the more special.
This journey began with a boat/icebreaker ride through icy waters to Ilimanaq. Depending on ice conditions, it can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours. Then there is a shorter, easier open boat ride, followed by a bumpy 30-minute long ATV drive through wild terrain. And only then do you reach the destination, where the hardy explorers are provided with a delicious sandwich for lunch and have plenty of time to walk on the glacier itself (with crampons also provided) and take as many photos as their hearts desire.
The return journey for us from Ilimanaq on August 15 was complicated due to ice conditions, leading the original small boat to be sent back to Ilulissat. Disky Bay was able to call upon a favour and get a solid, steel-hulled icebreaker come and rescue us. Although this led to a 4-hour delay, it felt like a bonus tour of the icefjords. All in all, this was a fantastic tour that I would recommend to all visitors to Greenland.
