点评:Friday 17th January were on a tour of the Island. We had just been to see the River Antoine Rum Distillery we were on our way back to the hotel and our driver took a slight detour to visit here.
It was a fleeting visit to this former Airport, located on the northeastern corner of the island. As we were driven the length of the runway our Guide took the opportunity to inform us of the Airport's history.
It was the country's first airport, opened in 1943. It was used by the Allies for military aircraft during World War II.
After the war, the airport reverted to back to being a civilian Airport. At this point the runway was extended to a length of 5,200 feet (roughly 1,600 metres).
Then on the 25th October 1983 US Marines captured the Airport during the US invasion of Grenada.
They seized two aircraft that were parked in the Airport at the time. One was a Cubana Airlines turboprop which had arrived the day before from Havana. The other was a biplane, used for agricultural spraying, it was a gift to Grenada from the Soviet Union.
In 1984 Point Salines International Airport, now renamed Maurice Bishop International Airport, replaced Pearls as Grenada's main airport.
Today the runway is used as a drag racing strip as well as a driving test course.
The decaying remains of the two aircraft, seized during the invasion in 1983, still remain on the ground for all to see. This was why we were brought here, so we could hear about a dark time in Grenada's history. The aircraft remains serve as a reminder of those times.
We did not stop here it was a quick drive by.
