点评:Pevensey Castle was our first stop and also one of our best experiences on the 1066 trail. A must-see for the events of 1066, medieval enthusiasts, or those interested in the broader history of the region.
The castle is set in a quaint village, near the south coast. It is easily reached from other south coast towns, like Bexhill, Eastbourne or Hastings. There is a car park directly adjacent to the entrance, which costs just a few pounds (proceeds go directly to the local museum).
The entry fee is reasonable and includes an audio guide, which provided a very good level of detail, without being too much.
We stayed for about 90 minutes in total, which was more than enough to see, hear and read everything. You could stay for longer, if the weather is nice, to explore the roman walls and the village of Pevensey.
We visited at the end of March, so we almost had the castle to ourselves.
The site is run by English Heritage - the staff were very friendly and polite. A small gift shop has a nice selection of books and local delicacies.
Pevensey Castle is perfect for families, groups and history buffs alike. On a nice day, there is more than enough space to wander and explore the site, without the crowds encountered at some other attractions (such as Battle Abbey).
There is an early medieval church just a few steps away from the car park, which was well worth a visit. The local museum was unfortunately closed and opens in April for the summer season.
