Family-Run, Ethiclal, Personal Experience! Do Not Miss!!
Elephant Freedom Village的点评
点评:The Elephant Freedom Village is truly an amazing experience not to be missed! It was the third Thailand elephant excursion for one person in our party, and they said the Elephant Freedom Village hands down provided the greatest, most fun, most personal elephant experience out of all of them.
There were five people in our party. We were the only people booked for that afternoon, so we had the elephants to ourselves! The day started with a half-hour orientation about the care and history of elephants in Thailand, and a bit about the Karen Hill Tribe, of which the people who run the Elephant Village are a part. It’s a small tribe of about two thousand people. The family who runs the Village are seventh-generation elephant caretakers.
After orientation, we got to meet the elephants and feed them. We fed them an entire crate of sugar cane. The elephants are trained to open their mouths and let you feed them, or you can hold out food and they will take it from your hands with their trunks. Then, we walked to the top of a hill where we got to feed them some more, and also give them lots of hugs and kisses. The elephants are trained to give you kisses!! It’s truly a delightful experience.
After hugs and kisses and more feeding at the top of the hill, we walked down to the river to bathe the elephants. They actually SANG when they got down to the river, they were so happy! We scrubbed them up good in the water for a good bit, while they rolled around to let us get to all their sides. At the end of the river bath, we took pictures while the trainers had the elephants squirt water on us with their trunks. What FUN!!
It all ended with a Thai meal back at the orientation place, where some very well-behaved dogs were milling about. I missed my own dogs at home so much that I bribed them with some of the rice from my meal.
I was in Thailand for eight days and we went to another city after Chiang Mai, and this was still my favorite part of the entire trip. The caretakers spend day and night with the animals, and the whole place is family-run (not corporate or owned by some investor looking to make a buck) and committed to ethical treatment of the elephants. I cannot recommend this elephant experience enough.
