点评:One of the things my wife especially enjoys about our winter getaways is the beach. For her the enjoyment is either lazing on the beach listening to the water lapping against the shore, and/or swimming in calm warm waters. Our most recent winter trip was to Costa Rica and having been here before, I attempted to explain that the beaches there were nothing like those in the Caribbean.
There beaches are often soft white sand perfect for walking on and at least some of the ones we’ve enjoyed are often sheltered either by reefs or bays and the waters gentle with small or no waves, perfect for swimming.
Costa Rica, and in fact the entire Pacific Coast is generally the opposite, with the beach open to the force of the ocean thundering in, in large rolling waves and riptides. Having already visited Mexico and Panama on previous trips this was something she was aware of, and some pre trip research videos and photos confirmed this but we still opted for Costa Rica.
All major beaches in Costa Rica are public and open to anyone and Playa Langosta the beach in front of our resort the Occidental Tamarindo was no exception. This was not an issue as we’ve been to public beaches before from Spain to Cuba.
The relative isolation of this one south of the town of Tamarindo does prevent most crowds and the usual vendors from visiting as is the case of those elsewhere.
Playa Langosta stretches south along the coast of Guanacaste Province from Punta Gorda to the river estuary that marks the northern border of the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas.
South of the river it becomes the equally isolated and pristine Playa Pacifica. In fact, at low tide, one can easily wade across the river mouth and visit the other beach.
If one does so be very aware of when the tide comes back in because at high tide one either must swim back or make a very long three hour walk south along the beach to the nearest trail inland. Then one faces a further hike of almost two hours up to the main highway heading north back to Tamarindo a half hour drive or two-hour walk away.
Playa Langosta is mainly isolated because there are only a few paths leading down to it open to the public. Many of the paths are on the property of the Occidental Tamarindo resort, and/or other condos, private residences and hotels. It is only to the north nearer Punta San Franciso that there is easy public access.
While this limits the crowds and vendors, to a few massage tables at the northern end, there are also no facilities including beach bars and/or washrooms. For guests staying at the resort or another adjacent place this is not an issue, but it can be for those visiting for the day.
While isolation may be a good thing, the actual beach itself is more of something to look at rather than swim. It is relatively straight and totally exposed with no coves, reefs or islands to break up the relentless waves pounding the shore.
Coupled with this the shore itself is covered with large black volcanic or coral rock formations. They are nice to look at and do create some tidal pools that offer areas for swimming but also preclude easy access to the beach and the water’s edge.
The best option for swimming is the southern end where the river estuary meets the ocean. Here there are calmer waters to enjoy. Some reviews I’ve read do mention the river has crocodiles in it, but I didn’t see any and believe they’re further upstream.
This section of the beach though is the least shaded, and the sun here is very powerful. Moving further upstream and/or into the treeline does offer some relief but often then must deal with insects.
There are also no sun loungers available except that from the resort itself, so one can either drag one across the beach from the resort if a guest, bring their own or do without.
For guests at the Occidental Tamarindo there is a shaded are a with plenty of loungers at the end of the path to the resort proper by the lifeguard station.
The beach itself is a mixture of sand and crushed shells which for some may make walking without water shoes a bit hard. There is also some debris and driftwood washed ashore especially to the area north of the resort. Fortunately, there is not as much man made garbage as the more populated beaches.
While not the best place for swimming, there are three activities
Playa Langosta is great for. The first is fishing. We saw numerous fishing rods among the guest’s luggage or propped up beside the buffet tables. Both guest and locals seem to enjoy a day surf fishing either off the rocks or past the estuary. One guest we chatted with at the bar one evening said he was out every day, and it was the most enjoyable part of his trip.
The second activity is surfing. Costa Rica is famous for its surfing and Guanacaste seems to be one of the epi centres. There were numerous surf schools and board rentals in Tamarind and even one on the path from the resort to the beach itself.
The waves here make conditions almost perfect for those who enjoy this sport both visitors and locals as we saw almost every day. This is not a beach for beginners though as we were advised. Unlike Tamarindo beach which is more sheltered and suitable for first timers this one does require more expertise and experience.
The third and final activity happens daily and is the perfect end to a day on holiday, the sunset. The sunsets at Playa Langosta are spectacular and must be viewed to really be appreciated. There is a bit of a ritual as everyone seems to gather on the rocks about twenty minutes prior to dusk and watch the sun set slowly and magnificently below the horizon basking the entire area in a brilliant orange hue.
