点评:The Pinang Peranakan Mansion has been on the top of my Georgetown "to-do" list ever since the place was featured on several TV shows. According to our guide, the building was once the residence of a big time local tycoon, and he was given this grand title of 'kapitan', sort of like a middle-man between the local Chinese and the Europeans during the colonial era. Anyways, the sheer size and scale of the mansion reflected the stature of the family that once dwelled there is obvious the moment you go past the front door. As you move from room to room, you will be able to see artefacts and photos from a bygone era. The centrepiece of the ground floor is the long dining table, called the 'tok panjang'. This table was used for hosting important functions and you can see the fancy porcelain tableware and cutlery that was used back then. On the second floor, you will be able to see the opulent bedrooms of the family, and of course the beautiful furniture and fine works of art. After that, you can go to the 'back of house' and see an actual kitchen and servants' quarters. The time spent there is a real history lesson.
