点评:Devil’s Churn is an inlet funneling water in from the ocean. The inlet developed over many thousands of years as wave action carved into the basalt shoreline, first forming a deep sea cave whose roof eventually collapsed. As the tide comes in it can throw spray several hundred feet into the air when the waves reach the end of the churn.
There’s a winding (doesn’t every walkway, trail or road in Oregon wind?!) path down to the ocean from the parking area. It turns to the side and leads to a small canyon. At the bottom of the canyon is a big crevice, like a crack in the earth. Maybe 20 to 30 feet wide. It narrows at the back. The ocean waves here are fierce. They come in make large waves then crash over. The waves are intensified as they are channeled into the gap. It is a cauldron. Active. Mean. Frothy. Wow, what a sight. From the walkway we could walk on the rocks for a closer view. From close up, it’s really fierce and active. And, as we’ve remarked a number of times, it keeps coming. I told Kathy that I put my nickel in and it goes on forever! The crashing waves of the area are one of the draws to the Oregon Coast.
