点评:This is a review for VOLUNTEERING at Connie’s stable. I would not recommend
I am writing this because I wish people had told me this before I came out to volunteer with Connie. I had a leave abruptly because the conditions were just not good enough. Be prepared to work overtime, you won’t get paid (even though it states in the contact you will), when you finish work she will require you to water her entire garden. I did not mind helping Connie out, it’s very hard work living her lifestyle but she is exploiting young girls and if you’re fine with being worked like a dog for free, that’s fine. You will not get a day off and if you do she may call you in to work. There is also a language barrier if you do not speak English. They are German, the horses and the dogs are responsive to German and they will talk in German in front of you even though Connie can speak English. It’s very rude and I was not told there would be a barrier. The German speaking girls had to translate everything Connie said.
Connie also stole my riding helmet and has blocked me on all social media because I left, and will not post it or keep in contact with me, I even offered to pay. I’m coming to get it very soon, we can talk about everything you’re doing wrong then.
- Food: she does not provide enough food, I had no breakfast or lunch. She cooked at night but we had no say in what it was, and I was always grateful but it just wasn’t enough. For the amount of work we were doing, and working in the heat. We needed food. She also bought only the cheapest of food. For example: Our fridge contained, long life milk, a sausage meat and some cheese. We had bread but it was stale, completely rock solid - this is what we had to live on. We had berries from her garden, we had to pick them and most of the time we just needed to get out of the sun. I understand for some people this is fine, and it was, but she made us feel very uncomfortable asking for extra food. The girls I stayed with never stood up for themselves as they are younger and didn’t want to be made to feel uncomfortable.
- DOES NOT SUPPLY WATER!
You cannot drink the tap water in Kefalonia but she will not supply you with drinking water. You must buy your own. She never told me you couldn’t drink the water either. Disgusting
- NO washing machine, you are expected to handwash your clothes. And they will be so dirty, sweaty and very smelly. (there is a Launderette in Sami, but again, this is another expense)
- you must buy your own toilet paper and this cannot be flushed.
- Car hire is essential (€1000) If you want to leave the yard and not cycle to the barn (she supplies bicycles but is very strict on them, the road to cycle is HOT and cars drive very fast. She doesn’t supply helmets for the bicycles either) you cannot get anywhere by foot or bike (only the barn - 20 minute cycle or 30 mins walk) You need to taxi or drive/hire a moped in order to travel the island.
- the accommodation is the bare minimum and directly underneath Connie’s house (no privacy) , it’s clean if you keep it clean (depends on who you’re bunking with) and there will be bugs in your room, lots of mosquitoes. I was bitten every night (Connie would not put up nets for us) and a standard
shower/toilet. You are expected to keep the
accommodation pristine, this is common decency and I agree with this. You cannot make any noise after 6pm, you can’t even close a drawer or window.
Responsibility and liability:
There was several circumstances where the girls that were hacking with me, were forced to take out a dangerous horse with young children (3-4) and felt extremely uncomfortable and scared that something may happen. But could not say no Connie, as she wouldn’t listen.
If you have money to spend whilst you’re there (buy food, travel and water, toilet paper)
