A Quick Trip to See the Giant Head, But That Was About It

点评：If you're in Changsha, seeing the massive Young Mao Zedong statue on Orange Island is probably on your list. Getting there is straightforward enough; we hopped on the subway, which seems to be the main way to access the island, and it drops you right there.
The first thing you'll notice, besides the sheer size of the park, is the crowds. It was packed when we went, which seems to be the norm for popular spots in the city. The main event, the sculpture of Mao's head, is truly impressive. It's enormous and makes for some great photos. We also enjoyed the really nice views of the city skyline from the island, looking back across the Xiangjiang River.
Honestly, though, that's about as far as we got. The heat was pretty intense, and the thought of walking the full length of the island to see everything else was just too much. We basically took the obligatory photos of the sculpture and decided to head back.
Here's a tip I wish I'd known: there are small buses or sightseeing carts that shuttle people around the island for a fee. If you're visiting on a hot day or don't want to walk for miles, I'd highly recommend looking for those as soon as you arrive. We missed out on that and it definitely limited our experience.
So, my recommendation? Go for the statue and the views, but be prepared for the crowds and the heat. And unless you're up for a very long, hot walk, definitely make use of the island's internal transport to see more than just the main attraction.
