A Lovely Town, but the Rain ruined it for us
朱家角古镇的点评
点评：This is a 1700-year-old Watertown located in the Qingpu District. We learned that Zhujiajiao means “Zhu Family Corner” referring to the first family that originally settled here near the corner of the river. The town prospered with trades of rice, silk and textiles via the river. Today, it is mostly a tourist attraction. The labyrinth of canals flowing in between the buildings with architecture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties made this town famous and it was dubbed as the “Venice of Shanghai”. They even have Gondola Rides here.
It is fan-shaped and covers an area of 11614 acres. It is the best preserved among the four ancient towns in Shanghai. It is known for its 36 Bridges with each one having its own distinctive look and features.
It is 30 miles away from central Shanghai, but it took our driver more than an hour to get us here because of the heavy traffic. It was raining heavily on and off on the day that we visited. The Gondola Rides were cancelled. There were lots of Stores selling everything imaginable but walking around with umbrellas on the slippery and narrow stone streets was difficult, and trying to get good photos was next to impossible. We just had to cut our visit short and spent some time in a mall instead. That was a little disappointing.
