点评:Our visit to the Salzburg Salzworks at Dürrnberg was one the highlights of our holiday. We were staying in Salzburg so we got a train to Hallein, then the hourly bus to Bad Dürrnberg Salzbergwerk.
The mine has been in use since Celtic times (if not earlier) and next to the Saltworks is a recreated Celtic village to show what life may have been like 2600 years ago. The village itself is worth a visit.
We arrived as soon as we could after opening time and there were still spaces left for most tours – we did not book online as we were unsure how long our journey to the mines would take via public transport. Once booked it was almost straight down to the “Robing Room” where we placed our rucksacks etc into lockers and put on our white protective overalls. N.B. best to use toilets by the booking desk as after that only limited facilities are available in the robing room and in the mines. The tour takes 90 minutes and covers roughly 1km.
From the robing room it is just a short walk to the train which takes you 400m into the mine. Inside the mine there are two 42m long slides, during the first slide a souvenir photo is taken (as well before, and during, the train ride) – there are also stairs for those who do not want to descend into the mines the same way as the miners used to.
Whilst in the mines you cross the border into Germany (then back again). Towards the end there is a boat trip across an underground lake; followed by a sampling of some raw (unrefined) salt; which to my surprise was quite sweet (due to the low concentrations of salt present). On finishing we were given a small container of salt to take home.
Afterwards, we headed to the café: the refreshments were good and my Apfelstrudel was the best presented one I had on this trip. There is also a gift shop and an interesting museum.
