点评:A few friends and I visited the museum and took the Paradise Mill tour too. The museum is compact yet full of diversity, from a stuffed panda to an Egyptian Mummy case, with much to delight the visitor in between these highlights. The Tunnicliffe prints and watercolours also are a great legacy of a local, world class artist. The mill machinery on display is fascinating and evokes a world so familiar to my parents’ generation but now almost vanished from Britain.
The Paradise Mill tour was amazingly good, and Daisy our guide as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as anyone could hope for. That the looms were in commercial operation as late as early 1980s is almost unbelievable. Daisy brought the social and class distinction of mill working to life, and the complexities of Jacquard loom card production were mind boggling - indeed, like riding a bicycle blindfolded and upside down …. One of the best museums I’ve ever visited, small in scale but packing a fabulous punch.
Add in friendly staff, with great coffee and cake, and any visitor is certain to be delighted.
