The White Cliffs of Monte Conero

点评：This clifftop lookout point was one of the highlights of our walk around the small Conero Riviera town of Numana.
From here you see the startlingly white Monte Conero cliffs as they plunge down into the sea. It is both beautiful and dramatic.
It’s a panoramic view looking down over the Numana Alta beaches of Sapaggiola and Spaggia del Frate and out across the Adriatic Sea towards the horizon.
From here, you can walk down to either of the beaches below. On your right, a long flight of wooden stairs leads through bushland to Spaggiola beach. The start of the staircase is not immediately obvious but keep an eye out for the signpost (see photo below). To your left, you can walk down beside the Eden Hotel to find a white gravelly path down to the more striking Spiaggia del Frate.
The terraced area around the lookout has some simple landscaping and a small fountain with goldfish in the middle but is mostly dominated by the large, modern, metal cross which stands out like a beacon on the headland. There’s a plaque in Italian but other than the name (Antonio Petromilli) and date (28 October 1951), it was difficult to find out much more about it. Our google translation of the plaque didn’t help much.
Right by the edge of the lookout, is the unmissable and bright red Panchina dell'Amore (Love's Bench). Positioned to take advantage of the stunning view, it’s a bit corny but the view’s so good that we entered into the spirit and posed for photos.
Overall, even if you have only have a very short stopover in Numana, it’s worth taking the time to visit the lookout. It’s only a few minutes walk from the main town hall and the main square, Piazza del Santuario.
