点评:The Treviso Cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter, is an imposing building located in the Duomo Square of the said city. Its architectural style is neoclassical, albeit the temple which was originally on the same site was in romanesque style. The construction of the latter was carried out in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The present edifice dates back to the second half of the eighteenth century, being the crypt however the only part thereof remaining from the previous edifice.
The front façade of the church is a majestic appearance of beautiful aesthetics. Its most outstanding elements are a large staircase and the tall six trick cone shaped columns with their ionic capitals. It's really a fantastic view which reveals much elegance. The bell tower is unfinished, but nice anyway.
It's a three-nave church, the side aisles being narrower than the central nave. The interior is impressing on account of its grandiosity. On the ceiling one can observe seven hemispherical domes, five of them being over the central nave. The chancel is rich in marble statuary and wall painting, all of them of a great value, and giving the presbytery a splendour in line with the rest of the temple. The high altar is not profusely ornamented but is very nice. The whole is in fact alluring.
The cathedral houses many works of art, both in sculptural and pictorial compositions. Among them, the most important one is a painting by Tiziano depicting the Annunciation in which the representation of the angel is really original and precious. In the chapel where that masterpiece is located one can observe some splendid frescoes from the sixteenth century by the great Italian painter Giovanni Antonio Pordenone, such as those representing the Adoration of the Magi, the Dream of August, St. Peter and St. Paul, and St. Liberale.
The crypt under the cathedral is also of an utmost interest. In it one can admire beautiful artworks in both the painting and sculpture domains. On several walls and arches there are some remains of marvellous frescoes. Besides, some column capitals representing foliage motifs are really fantastic. The whole, with its diaphragmatic arches and multiple columns is spectacular. In it the tombs of some city bishops and the Ark of St. Liberale in the apse are indeed fascinating.
The cathedral concerned must therefore be visited while in Treviso. Though one is just wishing to watch the Tiziano's painting, once inside he will certainly become spellbound.
