点评:In July 2025 I was walking my 5 month old puppy in a section of Navajo State Park, Arboles CO, known as West Piedra, north of all of the campgrounds. There is a hiking/bike trail as well as some gravel roads. As we were walking, we saw a dog sled on wheels with 3 people being pulled by 8 dogs. Upon seeing this, I took my puppy off of the gravel road and up a small hill at least 30 feet away to get clear of the dog sled and give them full use of the road. As these 8 dogs were adjacent to us on the gravel road they, as a group, hooked left and ran up the small hill towards us. As this was happening the 3 people on the wheeled dog sled obviously unhooked the dog packs tow rope from the wheeled dog sled. I'm guessing to prevent themselves from being pulled off the road or flipped over. This of course meant that they were sacrificing my dog and I for their convenience. The 8 dog pack quickly encircled us, attacked my dog and pulled the tow rope around my knees and kept pulling, preventing me from attempting any escape. Fortunately, I had an expandable police type baton in my pocket and was able to use it to beat the 8 dogs back enough to stop the attack. By then one of the people from the dog sled approached and informed me she was a professional dog trainer. I replied "well, you suck at it". I said that I was going to call the rangers. The women replied that she knew the rangers. The guy from the dog sled also approached about an elbow length away from me and began yelling at me to leave. My knees were still tied together so I could not leave, as much as I wanted to. I put my arm up between us as a defensive barrier because he was aggressive and ordered him to back off 3 times before he complied. Once he stepped back I was then able to free myself from the dog tow rope. These 3 people then took the dogs and quickly left. They absolutely refused to identify themselves. I called the incident in to Archuleta County Dispatch. It took the CPW Ranger, officially CPW Officer, approximately 2 hours to respond and take my statement. The CPW Officer did know who the dog sled people were but would not tell me. The dog sled people are a dog tour company from Pagosa Springs CO known as Mountain Paws and they have a Special Use Agreement with the park. I showed the CPW Officer my puppy's rabies vaccination tag and stated that I want to know the vaccination status of the dog pack that attacked us. The CPW Officer did not know the vaccination status and did not have it on file, which you would think information like that would have to be on file, considering this Special Use Agreement and a state park full of people. It took the park a MONTH to get me the rabies vaccination status of this attacking 8 dog pack. The 8 dogs are vaccinated by the way. So, at the end of the day, its good to know the Park Rangers if you have a Special Use Agreement and your dog pack is out of control. They only issued 1 citation to the owner of Mountain Paws when by law it could have been eight citations. Mountain Paws sled dog company clearly lied their way through the investigation and attempted to blame me for the whole thing along with other crazy, irresponsible statements. Additionally, the Park Manager refused to terminate the Special Use Agreement with this company even considering what happened. The Special Use Agreement is currently undergoing a higher level review with the state however. In my opinion, Navajo State Park Colorado doesn't care about your safety, only their business arrangement. It took me a month and a Colorado Open Records Act request to the state to get the investigation and the name of the dog sled company. I'm sure the dog sled company Mountain Paws based in Pagosa Springs CO would dispute my words but I have the CPW investigation, veterinarian reports/bill for dog attack/bite and urgent care report ( for my knees ) as well as the follow up exam and X-ray so far. The area of the park where the dog sled tour operates is littered with the rotting corpses and other bones of likely poached elk and mule deer as well as broken glass and some other trash. So, if you like death, poaching, broken glass, trash, heat, dust, flies, mosquitoes, ATVs riding around in the Windsurf Beach campground, dog teams that are unresponsive to commands and don't wear muzzles and run off to attack people and other dogs, entitled tour guides and apathetic Park Managers/Officers Navajo State Park is your go to happy place. For boat enthusiasts be aware that I would frequently see people fishing at the crowded boat ramp while standing by the no fishing sign. The last time I was at the boat ramp I noticed the park corrected this issue by removing the no fishing sign. I know I always enjoy props and pump jets fouled by fishing line. I could go on and on. Remember that there is a much nicer campground maybe 20 miles north called Lake Capote by CO 151 and US 160. There are fish in the lake and shade trees in the camp ground. NM also has a Navajo Lake State Park with a much bigger boat ramp and a bunch of activities that kids would like.
