点评:The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is itself a beautiful historic home, but it also parallels much of Savannah's history. The house is now owned by the Telfair Museums, courtesy of it having been donated by the last family member who lived here. They offer interesting and highly informative tours of the home and its history.
The house itself has tours from about 10:00-5:00. It can only be seen by guided tour, but the good news, at least in our case, is that the guides are extremely knowledgeable and engaging. You'll want to stop by fairly early in the day (we came at 9:45). They may be able to take you right away, but you should be able to get a timed ticket if not.
For what it's worth, there are also combo tickets for this site and the excellent Telfair Art Museum. [As both are owned by the Telfair Museum].
As others note, the house was originally built around 1819, and acquired by the Owens family only a few years later. The house was built to impress -- and it does, having many innovations rare in what was then the colonies as well as unique design elements. As you go through, the desire for symmetrical design becomes increasingly apparent. The tour goes over the home, its architecture and design, its owners, and, yes, the slaves (or "enslaved people" if you prefer) who worked there.
You'll learn a lot in an hour. The house is beautiful, the story engaging, and the characters interesting. Our guide knew a lot and could answer just about any question anyone asked her. They let you take just about any pictures you want.
This is an excellent historical tour and a nice way to learn about Savannah's past. We highly recommend it.
