点评:Just back, yesterday, from 9 wonderful days scuba diving with Marieke, Mike, and the awesome crew at Scubaqua ( Anna, Timo, Noortje, Gary, Seth, Chrissy, Bart,Caro, Morgan). Made 25 great dives. Water was warm, (84 F) with nice visibility (60-80 ft). Skies were partly cloudy, with only a little rain, that never stopped us from diving. Wind was variable, a few dives were bumpy on the boat, but nothing we couldn’t easily handle, especially with all the assistance from the boat crews. Current was variable, but not even close to what I’ve seen in Cozumel over the years. All the dives were on the West side of Statia.
Like many Caribbean islands Statia was formed by volcanic activity. Lava flows into the sea created the base for the coral to grow. Interesting formations compared to the classic coral reefs in Coz, Bahamas, Cayman,
2 morning dives, with a shore surface interval in between, followed by delicious lunch boxes arranged by Marieke. Then a third dive leaving around 2:30 PM or so.
They run 2 boats, a small center console outboard, that can hold 8 comfortably, and a larger inboard, with cabin that holds maybe 14-16.
The boats are docked about a 3-4 minute ride from the shop, you have to get out of the truck, wave at the immigration folks, walk through the gated fence and get back in the truck. I called it the Caribbean fire drill. But the dock is a official border point of entry for Statia, so just smile, and enjoy the Carnival.
Something really nice about a beer, or glass of red wine after the third while sitting at the dive shop, on the beach, watching the Caribbean.
Totally relaxing.
We stayed next door at the Old Gin House, 2 minute walk from hotel to Scubaqua. Hotel bar and restaurant were nice, breakfast included in our reservation.
Marieke can arrange any shore excursions, for non divers, tours, hikes, massage, yoga. Don’t miss the custom dinner program at Quill Gardens, a boutique hotel at the foot of the volcano.
