点评:Xidi has changed a lot since my last visit 14 years ago. It is today very much more vibrant with lots more visitors and aspiring “artists” who were previously more in Hongcun and much less so in Xidi.
The authorities are smart in not allowing “loud speakers “ tourist guides so that there is less deaf defying loud hailers everywhere, a plus for Xidi which I hope there will keep to it for ever.
I sincerely hope the authorities in Xidi DO NOT allow the profligeration or overuse of red lanterns all over the village as that will destroy the image of any ancient village atmosphere, so too the excess use of signboards displayed by restaurants all over. This leads to overall untidiness in signboard displays of dishes/menu advertised every few meters.
I noticed too that there is a start in alcohol/beer display signboards hanging outside some restaurants. Hopefully the authorities will disallow such signboards to destroy the village atmosphere that should very much be preserved for the sake of Xidi to continue to be what it originally used all about. It will be a great pity if Xidi falls to the folly of Hongcun which today is devoid of what an ancient town should feel like.
I hope the Xidi authorities will take heed of these.
