A great site but the organisation could be better

点评：As we were passing en route to Flagstaff from Kayenta, we made a last minute decision to stop and give it a look. According to www.flagstaff.com, we weren’t obliged to take a guided tour, but etiquette dictated that if you didn’t, you would be expected to make a donation or buy some jewellery/art from the Navajo in attendance, which seemed fair enough.
As soon as we got out of the car a young guide told us we had to take a tour, so we had little choice. She quickly showed us around. I must admit, some of the footprints are astonishingly preserved, and I’m aware that experts have not identified exactly what animals made them, but almost certainly small - medium sized theropods. According to our guide, one was velociraptor tracks, one was an allosaurus, another a t-Rex, and those ones were by a pterodactyl. She tried to convince us at one stage that an unlikely looking rock was the fossil of a whole spinosaurus, on its side. Before we knew it we were back at the car. I wish we’d had the opportunity to view it all at our own pace and without the far-fetched commentary. I gave her $20 (not bad for 5-10 minutes work) and she looked disappointed.
The tracks are well worth a visit. I’m aware that some visitors have come away very disappointed. I think it would be better for all visitors if it was made clear that a tour with a guide was mandatory or not, and how much a tour would cost. And preferably any tour guides should have a rudimentary knowledge of what we were looking at. The current situation is unclear and not ideal. I appreciate that this land is Navajo land, but that doesn’t mean any tours given by them can’t be professional.
