Two and a half ours of bliss

点评：What a wonderful way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon in the Devon countryside floating on water. My friend and I had been planning to go on the Tiverton Horse-Drawn Barge for several weeks and obviously pictured this scenic trip in the sunshine. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage it until the end of September when the sun didn’t want to make an appearance, however it was dry during the trip.
We were there in time to see the morning trip return so had a chance to meet Brindley, the magnificent heavy horse who would be pulling us along the water in a complete calm and relaxing manner.
After we had boarded the ‘Tivertonian’ our host/skipper, Phil, introduced his passengers to what we were going to experience. He made you feel welcome and at the same time you were entertained by his humour.
This being one of the Serenity trips we would be asked to go into ‘library mod’ shortly after we left the Tiverton Basin. This lasted until we arrived at the turning point where we disembarked for a short period to take photos and listen to the lady horseman give a short presentation about the canal’s horses.
On the return trip we went back into ‘library mod’ until near the end of our journey. We could hear the trickle of the water against the hull of the barge, the clip clop of the horse’s hoofs on the tow path and the sounds of the birds. Phil had mentioned that in the spring the bird songs are prominent, so my friend and I are already discussing returning next spring for another trip. Hopefully the serenity trips will still feature in the 2025 schedule as it was so relaxing and peaceful.
We highly recommend this attraction to anyone who wants to get away from the chaos of modern life for 2 ½ hrs of relaxation.
