点评:We rolled into Catoosa in the middle of the night after driving in an unusual November rainstorm which later turned into a tornado while we were sleeping. In the morning, we scampered over from our hotel (there are a whole bunch within one mile.)The whale itself has been lovingly restored, although, as is generally known, the original work was not done by an experienced artisan although the work lives on as a big piece of Americana. If you are wondering about traversing Route 66 in one giant road trip, we decided not to. Here’s why. We have done several sections now and it takes much more time than you would think. We have completed Chicago to St Louis, Santa Fe, New Mexico to Amarillo, Texas as well as some of the area around Albuquerque. It’s a matter of timing and seasonal as well as simply finding things. We started this leg at the Blue Whale and doubled back into Tulsa. There is so much in this area. The Blue Whale is easy to find and photograph. Unfortunately, even with the restoration that has been completed, there are remnants of the park that need work. They are durable and it’s always about the money. There was a wooden Noah’s Ark (?) which is fenced off and in tough shape. The concrete mushrooms, bathrooms, and concession stand are still there, but ready for rehab. The Whale is in good shape. This is a great place to start or end your day, even when the place is soaked on a cold, wet, morning. Definitely a don’t miss if you are doing the Route, but remember you could easily spend a day in Tulsa on the Route 66 pieces of Americana.
