Overpriced but interesting

点评：Being solo on this trip i thought I'd best try the local museum to learn about the local culture and how the island came to be inhabited.
Located at the bottom of the town its easy to find and as with everything in Longyearbyen it's spotlessly clean.
As you go in, the usual shoes off, hang coats up and bags in lockers occurs. Lockers are good size, lockable and free .
The souvenir bit is the first thing you see and is quite good but is not the cheap commercial tat. Receptionist desk behind the souvenirs bit is new to me but she was polite enough and explained what was where.
Please note they do not take cash here!
The museum is small, and is mostly information boards and stuffed animals. Don't get me wrong, the information is excellent and the animals lifelike and varied. I did the whole thing in 20 minutes. Did I read every board? No, but I was able to see every display and understand the amazing heritage of the island and culture with ease.
I suspect that out of everything on the island it is one of the least profitable places which may reflect the price. 150 Krone is possibly not a lot compared to other things to do here in Svalbard but is it worth the £11 to walk around, I'd say not. However, if it's ensuring the preservation of the town and island then I'm happy to support it how I can.
Are there better activities? Most definitely and even just walking around the town is breathtaking at times.
If you are really interested in the culture and history then it's for you. Is it for kids? I'd say they'd be bored within a minute!
