点评:Let’s get this clear, West Street is both a small area of Yangzhou town, and its main tourist pedestrian street, Xi Jie (西街)which just happens to translate to West Street.
My wife and I went to Yangzhou for a short break and stayed in a Vienna Hotel, it says it’s the West Street branch but is about a kilometer away from Xi Jie. The hotel is surrounded by ‘local’ streets devoid of hordes of tourists. The few we saw poured from their bus in the evening, climbed back on early the next morning and whizzed off to ‘do’ more sights.
Note: There are three Vienna hotels in Yangzhou, but this one is the most convenient for Xi Jie.
Note: There are plenty of hotels nearer to Xi Jie, in fact the whole area heaves with hotels.
Anyway, back to Xi Jie. Both of our visits were in the evening. We spotted a small bus train and took a ride around the area for ¥20 each, then we strolled down Xi Jie which is a pedestrian street. The place is lined with shops selling tourist tat, noodle bars, fast food sellers selling all kinds of comestibles I’d never eat but we did succumb, on the second night, to a couple of cong you bin (葱油饼, onion oil biscuit) in lieu of dinner. There are also couple of Jiuba (酒吧), that emanate loud music, and coffee ‘houses’ that were short of customers. Maybe, just maybe they get busy when us old folk are tucked up in bed?
The less said about the restaurant dinner on the first night, the better! If you eat in this area expecting a culinary delight, you’ll be disappointed. You aren’t expected to eat there again, so they aren’t worried about the quality.
Note: The local dish is beer fish, a whole fish sautéed in a non-descript sauce. Be aware the dish has more bones than beer.
If you’re craving more familiar food there’s KFC, MacD’s, and Starbucks. There’s also a restaurant specializing in Western style dishes.
After we’d strolled up and down Xi Jie, we indulged in a motorized rickshaw back to the Vienna hotel for ¥10.
Somehow, I don’t think we’ll be going back to Xi Jie.
