点评:A few things before we enter the museum... outside behind the water tower is the Rosewarne Memorial- it was built by the residents just west of Gunnedah as a tribute to its young men who headed off to war. The roll of honour contains the names of fifteen soldiers who enlisted. Two of them, Thomas Torrens (32) and William Cavanagh (26) were killed in action on the Western Front... of the remaining soldiers all were wounded.
There are several information boards outside of the water tower as well. One of those information boards will tell you that Jenny McCracken is the artist who painted the Vietnam Veterans memorial art work that is displayed on the outside of the water tower and for many, this would be the main reason to visit.
There was a man, Tim Shaw, in Australia who made famous a saying, " but wait, there's more"... and indeed we have a perfect example of that. Step inside this water tower and its contents are like many other regional museums... except they are located in this case inside a water tower. You will go up and down stairwells to see everything. The water tower in itself is fascinating.
The water tower was built in 1908 and was the first reservoir constructed in Gunnedah. It remained in service until the late 1950′s when it was eventually replaced by a steel reservoir that had been erected nearby.
As I mentioned you can go up and down these stairs exploring different areas of the museum.. but then there is that last stairwell at the top. It feels like one you would find in a lighthouse... very narrow and curly. Once you make it to the top of the water tower, you are outside and you get a magnificent view of Gunnedah. It's been fenced in for safety but they have little 'windows' in the fencing for photographers... NOT that they help someone who suffers from fear of heights... I stood near the middle and admired from there!
