点评:We had a full day tour of Sandwich Harbour booked through our UK tour operator, Audley’s, and we were eagerly looking forward to it. We were not to be disappointed, it was a superb day out.
On arrival at Swarkomund the evening prior, we were requested to contact via the hotel reception Turnstone to let them know we had arrived. As scheduled the next morning, indeed a few minutes early, we were called. The day was on!
We met our guide, Evert, down in reception, and it very quickly transpired he was extremely knowledgeable in the local flora, fauna, wildlife and in particular the geology. Possessing a mind hungry for science and his favourite subjects, he was keen to impart much fascinating info and it also became quickly obvious he knew how to handle a legacy Land Rover Defender. He also had a good understanding of the tide times, critical as the southern leg is driven on the beach.
The itinerary was perfectly designed for us, and we were appropriately dressed with light down jackets as the coast can be a bit chilly. Indeed, it nearly always is! First stop was the balustrade just south of Walvis Bay to get up close and personal with the flamingos, before progressing further south to experience then harshness of this special coast. Highlights included a jackal feasting on a seal cub (it’s nature folks) and a heavily pregnant elephant seal.
Just north of Sandwich Harbour, we were ‘dropped off’, with directions to climb a few dunes that fringe to ocean and experience the other-worldly scenery before descending to a point where lunch would be set up. It was indeed a lunch that will live long in the memory, on a narrow strip of pristine beach bracketed by the ocean and the dunes, with rich birdlife and the occasional seal for company.
The return drive had an element of excitement as we tracked inland with another company 4WD to experience the dune drive. Descents with gradients up to 37 degrees below the horizon certainly made the drive interesting, but with the Land Rover and Evert’s skills coping magnificently, we always felt safe. Being in company with another company 4WD allowed some terrific photographs to be taken, as well as a stop of at one the high dunes overlooking the ocean that seems to feature in all articles or material related to this part of the world. It was also a great opportunity to get close up to Springbok, always looking good through a camera lens.
By 16:30, we were back in Swarkomund. The tour had been an unforgettable day out, and exceeding our expectations is getting us to a remote yet essential part of Namibia. It was hugely interesting, safe and extremely good value too. Most definitely recommended.
