An excellent museum with a wonderful collection
The Butler Institute of American Art的点评
点评：My wife and I are seasoned travellers from the UK who regularly take holidays specifically to visit museums and art galleries around the world. When I mentioned to an Ohioan work colleague that we were intending to visit the Carnegie in Pittsburgh and the Museum of Art in Cleveland, he suggested we also visit the Butler in Youngstown. We are so glad he did. The collection is both extensive in its scope and strong in its collection offering at least one piece by all the main artists we were expecting including those from the Hudson River School and contributions from the American impressionists. As well as these more well known artists, we were introduced to a number of artists we had never heard of before. The combination of art we know with art we don't is what we hope for when we visit galleries and the Butler exceeded expectations in this respect. We particularly enjoyed the western gallery with the portraits by Elbridge Ayer Burbank. We appreciate that this work needs to be presented with sensitivity and we noted the sign saying this work is being re-interpreted. That is fine but this work, in terms of both its artistic merit and as a reflection of the history of the USA, deserves to be shown. The museum has a relaxed feel and we were able to enjoy a leisurely feel without feeling rushed. In fact we enjoyed it so mush we actually visited on two consecutive days. In summary, this museum is a gem and it deserves to be much better known. I owe my work colleague a very great debt of gratitude.
