A must for growers of roses

点评：There's an interesting variety of views on the garden in recent reviews. I have been here before, 10 years ago, and knew what to expect when I revisited it in June of 2024. Keep in mind that this garden is not primarily designed to be beautiful, or to be meticulously maintained. It is called a rosarium for a reason - its primary historical purpose has been to act as a collector of significant roses, similar to what an arboretum is for trees. It IS beautiful, in season, but that is an incidental result of its primary purpose, to acts as a catalogue of roses. In that, it is outstanding.
A few comments:
Timing will matter. While there are quite a few modern roses in the collection, which will bloom all summer, the majority are the older once-blooming roses, which reach their peak in June. Out of season, this garden will not be as attractive.
This is a great place to educate yourself on the different categories of historical roses, and what they look like (eg. gallicas, albas, damask, etc). It helps if you know some German, or have access to a translation app on your phone, as much of the signage is in German.
Almost all of the roses were properly labelled, which was very helpful (and which is a huge achievement, given the large number of roses).
For me, it was particularly nice to see the large collection of climbing roses, as we cannot grow those in our climate. They were spectacular when I was there.
I ate at one of the kiosks in the garden (bratwurst and chips). Apparently prices in the main restaurant are high, but at the kiosk they were reasonable, and there was a nice picnic area next to the kiosk.
