点评:My 16-year-old daughter, Maddie, and I just finished the 7-day trip to the Chinese Wall with Benchmark. Prior to us booking the trip they were excellent at communication and answering our questions. I felt confident when I placed the deposit to secure our spots on the trip several months in advance. Once the trip came it absolutely exceeded my expectations. From the moment we arrived at the airport until we returned to the airport, they never treated us like clients or customers, but like family members. Once we arrived at the ranch it was quickly apparent how well taken care of the facility and cabins were, very clean and well maintained, and this included the horses, mules and tack. We received a very warm welcome from Darwin and his wife Shellie at the main lodge.
The trip itself was amazing with the best scenery and trails one can imagine. The horses were sure footed and easy to ride. We were led off on our trip by Brooke and Maddee. Both cowgirls were very knowledgeable and helpful along the trail answering questions for all of us, keeping a close eye on all the riders and horses to make sure everyone was safe, comfortable and having a good time. Bridger and Cade were the cowboys that took care of the pack train, their expertise and many years of experience were blatantly obvious in the way they were able to pack the gear and load it onto the mules quick and efficiently, the way they handled the stock with care, and each morning and night they took care of watering and feeding their horses and mules before they ever stopped to eat their own meals.
Speaking of meals, don’t come on this trip if you want to diet because you eat very well! To give you an idea, one breakfast was cowboy coffee (lots of coffee available every morning), fried eggs, pancakes (they made my kid a Mickey Mouse pancake just to be nice which started her morning off right, it was a nice little extra) and fresh cut fried potatoes, and they even thought to bring fresh peppers and onions to cook in the taters, how awesome is that! The sack lunches to be eaten on the trail were always good and filling. The suppers were amazing, pork chops, steaks, homemade spaghetti, freshly made desserts and on and on, I always cleaned my plate and went to bed stuffed!
The tipi tents were designed by Darwin himself based on his decades of mountain guiding experience and were very neat how they were constructed, the ease in which they went up, and were very comfortable in the mountain environment. They also added to the mountain man/wild west feel of the camp and pack train experience.
They had excellent camp areas picked out with plenty of level areas for us to set up our tents. All were located close to running rivers or creeks that were an excellent source of drinking water as well as fishing. My daughter and I caught (and released) well over 30 cutthroat trout, but Brooke was nice enough to cook up a couple for us in camp with Lemon Pepper and Johnny’s Seasoning, served on Ritz crackers with a dash of hot sauce, talk about a tasty snack before supper!
On the final day when we rode back to the ranch the rest of their family was there waiting at the corral and taking charge of the horses. Bridger's wife, Amber, and baby daughter Scarlet, along with his little brother and Madee's husband, Walker, were all waiting for us. It was pretty cute to see baby Scarlet's little face light up to see her dad come riding in with the mule train.
We headed down to the cabins to put away our gear and take advantage of the very nice shower house they built with plenty of hot water and towels, the shower felt great! We made our way to the main lodge to find out Amber had fixed lasagna from her grandma’s recipe, as she said, “There’s no place for Stouffers at Benchmark, homemade is way better.” After a long day's ride, it sure hit the spot!
I could go on and on about what a wonderful father daughter adventure this was! Their kindness and attention to detail gave us a headful of memories we shall cherish forever! I have zero complaints, but if you forced me to gripe about something, I’d say it’s my pants fitting too tight after the trip because they fed us so well!
Don’t take my word for it, if you’re thinking about a horseback mountain camping adventure in the beautiful Bob Marshall Wilderness, I’d say get ahold of the Heckman family at the Benchmark Wilderness Guest Ranch and book your trip! I know I sure am glad we did!
