点评：Since I knew we would be in the Tillamook area, I began researching what else was around the area ahead of our trip and discovered captivating pictures of this Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint location. The sound of an Octopus Tree also especially stood out and caught my interest. When we arrived in the afternoon on a Friday in June 2024, it was in the 60's for temperature. There was plenty of parking in the lot closest to the lighthouse. From there, it's only a 0.2 mile walk to the shortest lighthouse in all of Oregon at only 38 feet in height. The Fresnel lends at Cape Meares is one of only two eight-sided lights in the U.S. with the other in Hawaii.
Whales can be seen from December to January and again from March to April. Other wildlife to keep an eye out for depending on the timing of your visit include peregrine falcons, seabirds, common murres, sea lions, dolphins, porpoise, elk, bear, and deer, amongst others. After admiring the Pacific Ocean and surrounding scenery, we looped back to the parking lot and walked 0.1 miles more from there to the famed Octopus Tree. The tree is a Sitka spruce with no central trunk and estimated to be around 250 years old.
