点评:Unfortunately, I missed a tight connection here, so I had about an hour to kill. The serendipitous good news was that this station is a work of art! Just my luck! Although the station was originally built in 1847, it was completely renovated for the Expo 2000, based on the ideas and concepts of Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The station was transformed into both an "environmental station" and a "cultural station." It has solar panels on the roof for sustainability and the building itself is replete with art. The redesigned station was officially opened on November 25, 2000, but sadly Hundertwasser had passed away a few months prior.
The artwork features many different colorful tile mosaics, both inside and out, and there is a fountain flowing from the 2nd floor to the 1st. This fountain was installed in 2004 by the artist Hans Muhr with the inscription, "Water. The way you flow is good."
Inside, a plaque regarding the World War 2 history of the station says:
"The Uelzen freight depot was destroyed by an Allied bombing raid on February 22, 1945. More than 500 prisoners from the Uelzen satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp were forced to carry out cleanup work between March and April 1945. On April 18, 1945, British troops liberated Uelzen. Shortly before, the prisoners were transported back to Neuengamme. Most of them did not survive the end of the war."
It is a necessary reminder of the cruelty of the past, but hopefully the beauty and power of art will lead to a brighter, more caring future.
