Scenic day trip from Milwaukee or Madison

点评：The Aldo Leopold Foundation near Baraboo is a great destination for nature lovers and is an easy day trip from Milwaukee or Madison. They offer guided tours on Saturday at 10am in summer and it is well worth the $15 to see inside the Shack vs. self-guided. I bought a ticket online the day before, but others bought the ticket at the visitor’s center the day of. The visitor center grounds are beautiful and I’d recommend arriving at 9am when they open to walk the red and blue loop – there are interpretive signs, some great quotes from Aldo, and beautiful scenery. They also have a nice museum inside the visitor center with information about Aldo, his work, his family, and the property. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge to enjoy this visit.
The tour group size is small, less than 10 when I went, so there was a nice exchange of stories and background info along the tour. You do need to drive from the visitor center to the Shack, but it’s only a few minutes drive – we carpooled with other guests. The Shack is as I pictured it from reading Sand County Almanac. We spent some time walking around the grounds and looking around inside the Shack – hearing stories and seeing pictures from the guide. We walked to the site of the Great Oak, and also down to the sandy beach. Only downside is a LOT of mosquitos at the height of summer – they have bug spray.
The visitor center has a nice gift shop, restrooms, and water bottle filler.
I will definitely be back – plan to reread the almanac and visit in other seasons.
