➕ Tallest structure in Tokyo with a great view
➕ Fair entry fee
CONS
➖ Long waiting lines
This place is famous, even sacred, in its own way. Every guidebook lists it as a must-see, and now, having finally been there, I understand why. The second tallest man-made structure on Earth, within reach.
I’d seen the Skytree from miles away, even as fog covered the city, casting a thin veil over everything. My friend and I walked toward it, guided by its towering silhouette like travelers to an oasis mirage. It pulled us in, impossible to ignore.
There was a festival or some kind of event around the base, and the crowds were thick. We made our way straight to the entrance. Lines looped back on themselves, stretching endlessly toward the reception desk. Nearly an hour later, after weaving through the crowd, we finally purchased our tickets from a machine. We thought we’d arrived, but another line waited, taking us to the elevator.
At last, we stepped inside, and the lift rose higher than I’d ever been.
The visitor floors, circular in shape, were arranged so we could see every inch of the city stretching out beneath us. Glass walls opened up the view, letting us see the urban landscape for miles, right up to Mt. Fuji, faint in the distance. The crowd surged, constantly moving, but everyone was patient, giving each person time to take it all in.
We climbed to the highest public floor, and by then, night had fallen. The sky grew darker, the city below lit only by countless lights. There was something unreal about seeing everything from this high up, as if the world’s edges curved at the horizon, making it feel like we were at the center of it all, looking down on everything else. I picked up a few souvenirs from the gift shop and took the final descent, holding onto that sense of scale, of standing so far above everything familiar.
It’s strange, but I felt like I saw the city differently up there, closer yet further, everything connected, all at once.
