点评:My 8 year old and I had a peaceful and pleasant day and spent around 6 hours here. All the staff were so friendly and really seemed to care about us having a positive experience. We were surprised it was so quiet on a Saturday. There was a wedding on one of the lawns, but this was easy to avoid, apart from having to run out of the background of a photo!
We enjoyed exploring the grounds and seeing the animals. A woman with a long purple plait clearly does a great job looking after them and was also very informative and kind.
The school dinner exhibition had some fascinating elements, including relevant documentary clips from across the years. Two lovely women were cooking and offering samples of a 1940s school dinner, using some produce from the grounds, which we enjoyed tasting.
The river trail was beautiful but could do with better signage as we did get a bit lost.
The farm vehicles and gypsy caravans were interesting to look at. I thought it would have been nice to have one open to play in, perhaps a replica if the real ones are fragile. My children all love playing house and the old-fashioned gypsy caravan and shepherd hut would appeal greatly.
Abbotts Hall was full of exhibitions about local history, most of which I was previously unaware of. The oral history recordings made by George Ewart Evans were poignant, as was the room all about St Audry's, one of the first more holistic mental health hospitals.
Lastly, we explored the walled garden, where some of the school dinner had come from and the bee garden.
In the shop I was able to buy flour that had been milled in the watermill, which makes excellent bread and a coffee blend that was created to celebrate the birth of their now-14-month-old Suffolk Punch foal, which I am yet to try. I was very happy to join in celebrating the birth of the beautiful little Juno!
