AVOID play of Emma by Jane Austen - it makes a mockery of her books and characters

点评：A beautiful theatre. The view from the Grand circle benches is no worse than the back grand circle booked seats. Actors are a long way. Take your opera glasses. Fine seats for £13. Only in the stalls would you be able to see the chapters expressions.

I saw Emma during the Jane Austen festival and was hearty disappointed. Or to be truly honest, horrified.
The subtext - there was non.
Austen's sense of humour - replaced with cheap laughs
The manners of the time - completely ignored in this adaptation.
The Bates' were missing and the writer instead made every other character ridiculous. Emma is outright horrid throughout, a very different character. The plot was messed around, there was very little original dialogue. It felt like a poor American sitcom, not a story of subtlety and satire. It was moderately unrecognisable. Even my friend who's only seen 1 film adaptation said it felt wrong. If anyone who loves the books is thinking of going, I think you'd be disappointed. I paid £13 for the grand circle benches (in the gods)(it's £35 -45 for all your other seats) and wish I hadn't paid even that much. We left at the interval, and would have left sooner if we'd bean near the end of the row.
The acting was good I think (who knows what they were aiming for) and I was impressed with the costumes.
Maybe it was a good play if it weren't called Emma. I think some attendees enjoyed it as they were laughing in the right points, rather than gasping as me and friend 2 were.
To be produced by this theatre, the theatre that Jane attended herself, on the 250th anniversary, I'm appalled.

我觉得表演很精彩（谁知道他们想表达什么呢），服装也给我留下了深刻的印象。
如果不是叫《艾玛》，这出戏或许还不错。我觉得有些观众很喜欢，因为他们笑得恰到好处，不像我和朋友二那样倒吸一口凉气。
这部戏竟然由简自己也去的剧院在250周年纪念日上演，我真是震惊了。
