点评:When the tickets for October’s Dino Snores for Adults came up, there was no way I wasn’t buying some for me and my partner as we both love dinosaurs.
We got the Camp Sequoia VIP tickets, which were £280pp and got you the following extras:
- fast track entry into the museum
- a camp bed each on the third floor of the Hintze Hall, overlooking Hope the Whale
- a free drink from the bar
- table service for dinner outside the main restaurant amongst the fossils
- a surprise little tote bag, with an eye mask and a mug
Anyone not with these tickets got yoga mats to sleep on the floor on the ground floor level under the whale, buffet service for dinner, and obvs no free gift etc.
I’ve seen some reviews bemoaning that you can’t leave your luggage in the museum in the day and come back for it at night. If you have a lot of luggage like we did, there are plenty of corner shops nearby who will take it in for you for a small fee, which is only the same as the cloakroom at the museum.
Walking past the main queue to get in, and a short line for security, we were taken up to our camp beds and given some time to settle. There was only one main accessible bathroom (the main bathrooms down on the ground floor), but we were told we could use the staff toilets to get ready for bed and such- very helpful!
After a short introductory talk by a man wearing the most excellent dinosaur shirt, we were served dinner.
I’ve seen some reviews suggest the food is poor, but maybe that’s the buffet experience. Ours was very nice! Lovely chunky ham hock terrine, followed by buttery soft beef and mash (only criticism being there wasn’t enough gravy!) and a nice rose petal and raspberry chocolate mousse. I don’t know what the veggie options were like.
After dinner, you essentially had 2 options: wander around the museum, or do the activities schedule set out for you. I’ve seen some reviews suggest this is regimented- it is not, and you can do whatever you liked. We spent the majority of the time taking in the museum and did 2 of the activities available- a talk (about how great sharks are), and a live animal show-and-tell. There was also a movie (Jurassic Park), drawing, board games, a guided activity trail and stand up comedy.
Going round the museum at night with about 10% of the people that would be in there during the day was magical! The majority of things were open I believe, but there were some special exhibitions, such as the David Attenborough exhibit and the super rare finds that were closed (we go to see those in the morning before the museum officially opened). Some of the exhibit areas that were more interactive were turned off, too- my partner was particularly disappointed about the earthquake simulator!
In regard to the talks/activities, I’d say it needs to be better signposted. We were given a map, but the auditoriums were still a challenge to find, particularly when you’re in a rush to not miss things! Just a little sign pointing you in the direction when you get to the right area would have been good.
I’ve seen some reviews say that these activities were very regimented and rushed- I don’t think that’s right per say, as they did have a schedule to keep to, but we did get shepherded away from the shark lady when we wanted to ask questions after the show. Maybe there could have been more time given for that?
Throughout the evening there was access to the bar where you could buy coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol throughout. Cakes and sandwiches were also on sale if you wanted.
We went to bed at around 2:30am, to the sounds of a harpist playing various tunes such as (of course) the Jurassic Park and Game of Thrones themes (remember that?!). Lights turned off at 3am, thank god for that eye mask!
I’d definitely also recommend earplugs for sleeping! There was one person (who was obviously in need of a CPAP machine) snoring so loudly and echoing through the hall that I thought it was my partner next to me! With my earplugs in and my eye mask on, though, I managed a couple of hours of sleep.
In the morning lights came on suddenly around 7am and the sounds of the Jurassic Park theme echoed through the halls. There was optional yoga in the scheduled for 6-7am, but we snoozed for a bit before getting our things together and cleaning our teeth. Again, thank god for that small staff bathroom!
Breakfast was in the main cafeteria, and was all buffet service. Full English, which was a decent portion, no real complaints although we didn't get the VIP service again. I can see why it may not have been possible, but there was no toast or cereals if you did want the full hot breakfast.
After breakfast, the gift shop opened and we all got 10% off with our Dino Snores lanyards. It would have been nice if there was a special t-shirt or something to commemorate us being there, but sadly there wasn’t. The gift shop was very good though, all the same.
There was a place in the basement of the building to leave our luggage, so we dropped some things off before going back up to check out some of the exhibits that weren’t open overnight. Then we left.
Overall, this was a magical experience and well worth the money. It was pretty much everything we had hoped it would be! Thank you so much NHM!
