查斯尔顿之家和花园的点评
点评：Chastleton isn’t open every day, so check before travelling. It’s well worth a visit and we thoroughly enjoyed the two hours we spent there. Make sure to follow the brown NT signs so as not to end up in the village of the same name. Plenty of free parking with some picnic benches. Once through the visitor reception area, there is a short walk beside a field to reach the entrance. Lots of benches to rest on and enjoy the view. An informative video in the stable block gives you a glimpse of what to expect inside the house. It’s being maintained using controlled conservation, which makes it feel, in some rooms, as if the last family to live there have just gone out for a while. The plasterwork and carved panelling are exceptional and appear to be in remarkably good condition considering the house was completed in 1612. It has a delightful, romantic atmosphere and we loved it.
The gardens are well looked after and still had plenty to admire at the time of our visit in October. Lots of veg too, along with fruit, a small orchard and some ancient looking topiary bushes.
There is no cafe on site, although on occasion the church next door (not NT) offers teas and cakes to boost funds. The church was open to us, but refreshments were not on offer, so there were some tea and biscuit options in the stable block, along with toilets.
