点评:Walking through St James’s Park was the most scenic way to get from Buckingham Palace to Whitehall.
It is a very lovely 20 minute walk, although we took longer because we stopped to have a sandwich on a park bench beside the lake. It was very relaxing spot to sit. We spent some time simply enjoying watching the birdlife. Swans glided by, grebes dived down and bobbed back up again, and the ducks clamoured after crumbs.
St James’s Park is the oldest of the eight Royal Parks in London. It has colourful flower beds, mature trees, a large lake with two tiny islands and a couple of fountains, and a quaint Beatrix Potter-like garden cottage, charmingly named ‘Duck Island Cottage’.
However the two highlights are the Blue Bridge and a colony of pelicans.
There’s nothing remarkable about the bridge itself but it’s worth seeking out because when you stand in the middle, you get great views in both directions. To the west, you have a tree-framed view across the water towards Buckingham Palace. In the other direction, you are looking at Duck Island and the Swire Fountain with Whitehall Court, the Horseguards and the London Eye in the background.
The pelicans were an unexpected surprise. They were introduced to the park in the 17th century when the Russian ambassador gifted them to King Charles II in 1664. We wondered what Charles II’s reaction was to this curious gift. Was he a fan of exotic waterfowl? Or was he secretly wondering how soon he could regift them?
I believe that you can watch the pelicans being fed fresh fish between 2:30pm and 3pm near Duck Island Cottage. We weren’t there at the right time but if we had been, it would’ve been a bit of fun to watch.
