点评:Old St. Paul’s had stood for almost six centuries when, in 1666, it was destroyed in the Great Fire. Charged with rebuilding, Christopher Wren created the tallest church in London, taller than the towers of Westminster Abbey—indeed, taller than any in England, save one (and its dome second only to that of St. Peter’s in Rome). In the crypt are entombed Britain’s greatest heroes: Lord Nelson, who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile and Trafalgar, and the Duke of Wellington, who was victorious at the decisive Battle of Waterloo. Here, too, Christopher Wren is buried, the architect of the cathedral, whose epitaph was written by his son: “Reader, if you seek his memorial—look around you.” Lesser lights include the poet John Donne, former dean of the cathedral (whose monument was the only one to survive the fire); and, dimmer still, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, famous for his depictions of Ancient Rome (and a personal favorite). "After the Meeting," in fact, was acquired by the National Gallery this August, only a few months ago.
