点评:Booked the festive afternoon tea as we'd previously had afternoon tea on the steam train in October and it was a lovely experience however this was definitely not! Should've departed at 2.50pm, we had an email prior saying delayed 20 mins to 3.10pm, OK not so bad as will still be daylight. Ended up boarding the train at 3.30pm. Tea tray was put on table and a disappointing array of food was on the tray, nothing as appealing as previously apart from the huge scones. At 2.50pm I asked a volunteer if we were going to be leaving the station as if not I'd rather not have the afternoon tea, she was lovely she went to enquire and came back to say, yes we'd be leaving shortly but a shorter trip so we still returned at 5.50pm. Eventually at 3.55pm we set off. A male steward, the one who collects the cash for alcoholic drinks, his phone started to ring and he said, I. A very loud voice, that it was an apology to table 2 ( my table ) for the delay, it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate me. The train travelled very slowly to Willington but by this time it was pitch black outside. The food was very mediocre and most of it was bitten then returned to tray, however like I said the scones were amazing. If this was prepared by a chef then he needs to visit other establishments that do a festive afternoon tea for hints on producing better fayre. On the return trip, the same male volunteer was trying to upsell the other trips they were doing and yet again made a remark to the whole carriage that the driver apologised to table 2 for the late start, if this was a genuine apology then it should have been said to me personally but it was done to intimidate and humiliate, very bad customer service.
We eventually returned at approximately 6.15pm, very cold and deflated for what should have been an amazing Christmas present for my 98 year old mum.
After many rides and experiences on this railway I will never book it again, it's overpriced and this time was very poor however the majority of the volunteers are amazing, do a great job and we're a pleasure to interact with.
