点评:We visited Montacute house during wet, windy, cold weather in May. It wasn't the best time to see it - but the place is still fantastic. It is probably the best-preserved Elizabethan manor house in England and impresses by its size and setting. The formal gardens surrounding it aren't colourful - but the 'wibbly wobbly' hedge is dramatic and interesting. In 1947 a severe snowstorm covered the hedge in many feet of snow and because of post war gardener shortages it was not cleared for many months. The weight of snow distorted the yew branches so that what was once a straight, level smooth sided hedge looks today like a hedge on steroids! Only the lower floor of the house is currently open because there is a major project to make the staircases safe. IT means that some paintings can be seen at eye level but restricts house access to a few ground floor rooms. Outside there is also a croquet lawn, and plenty of walks to take - if the weather isn't as awful as it was on our visit! Nice cafe, bookshop and gift shop as usual.
