点评:Manchester Cathedral isn’t exactly hiding, but it’s also not screaming “LOOK AT ME” like some of its flashier European cousins. It’s more like that classy relative who sits quietly in the corner until you notice, “Oh wow, you’re actually stunning.”
First big win: it’s free to enter. (My Yorkshire ancestors cheered from the heavens at that news.) Of course, we did leave a donation — partly because it’s the right thing to do, and partly because I didn’t want to be chased out by a very judgmental-looking gargoyle.
Inside, the windows are jaw-dropping. Stained glass so beautiful you almost forget your phone exists for a solid 30 seconds — which is basically a miracle in 2025. It isn’t the biggest cathedral you’ll ever see; you won’t need to pack sandwiches and a map. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere. You really do feel the history in the walls — which is probably why I suddenly felt the urge to walk slower and look thoughtful, like I was in a BBC history documentary.
Add to that the fact it’s surrounded by excellent bars and restaurants, and it’s basically the perfect sightseeing combo: history first, cocktails after.
Highly recommend — though don’t be alarmed if you find me there again, pretending to be a medieval monk for dramatic effect.
