Vara has changed; not in a good way
VARA Winery and Distillery的点评
点评：I was excited when Vara opened, because I love Spanish wines and I loved the concept of this place; bringing wine from Spain to bottle here, along with wines from New Mexico grapes, with a similar style (New Mexico Tempranillos, etc). I liked the people who worked there, including the knowledgeable distiller, who once took us on a tour and explained how the distilling process worked. Fascinating.
A lot has changed. Vara no longer imports wine from Spain. which really disappoints me. Worse, they have hired the folks from the Gruet winery (that closed permanently here a few years ago) and now a large percentage of their wines are bubbly/sparkling wines. Not a staple in my - and I would say most wine lovers' - houses!! LIke once a year, if that, for a holiday. This is not what I thought Vara was about. Big disappointment.
I went to the Holiday event at the winery in December. Like probably others, I brought a friend who hadn't been there before and had considered joining. How can you have an event like this and not give wine tastings in the tasting room?? They didn't. My friend wasn't able to taste almost any of the Vara wines, except the few that were offered at a long table, including a sweet??Albariño?, Huh. The distiller I met before is no longer there. A young woman was offering tastings of spirits and told me that she was the new distiller. I asked her how she ended up being a distiller (thinking it was a long-term goal of hers, lots of training, etc). She said she hadn't planned to be a distiller, but "worked her way up" at the winery.
I am sorry to see the old Vara go.
